From Feminine Power to Radiant Smiles - How I Landed (and Loved!) Becky's Vixen-Themed Hens Party

January 18th, 2025

Hey everyone! It's Nate here, and I'm still buzzing from the incredible energy of Becky's hens party last weekend. For those who don't know, I'm a photographer based in the Newcastle area, and I'm working hard to make my mark in the wedding photography world, particularly across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens, Central Coast and the surrounding regions. Let me tell you, this gig was a major step in the right direction – and it all happened right here in the beautiful Hunter Valley! It was also a blast!

So, how did I, a guy with a camera, end up capturing the magic of an all-female, "Vixens and Femme Fatale" themed party? It all started with a little bit of networking (and, okay, maybe a dash of luck!). I'd met a friend of Becky's and we'd chatted about my passion for capturing genuine moments and my desire to specialise in wedding-related photography, particularly for brides and events in Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and Port Stephens. She mentioned Becky's upcoming hens and, knowing the theme, suggested I pitch an idea.

My brain went straight to - mood. This wasn't just a party... it was a celebration of confidence, fun and female empowerment. I wanted to capture that vibe. My pitch? To bring a playful, slightly edgy element with a portable red light that I could mount to my camera. Think a subtle nod to a raw feel but keeping it classy and fun, enhancing the femme fatale atmosphere. Becky and her bridesmaids, planning their Hens weekend, loved the concept!

The night itself was electric. Picture this - a group of gorgeous women, dressed to the nines, embracing their inner vixens and me, weaving through the laughter and champagne toasts, red light casting a warm, flattering glow. I'm not gonna lie, walking into a room full of women I didn't know with a camera and a somewhat unconventional lighting setup, was slightly nerve-wracking at first.

But here's the thing, these ladies were amazing. From the moment I arrived, they were welcoming, hilarious and completely themselves. The key, I think, was being myself. I cracked jokes (some good, some probably terrible!), joined in the banter and genuinely embraced the fun of the evening. I wasn't just "the photographer", I was part of the party, there to help them document their awesome night. And I am so grateful for feeling so welcomed.

What I learned is this, creating a comfortable atmosphere is everything. When people feel relaxed and like they can be themselves, that's when the real magic happens. You get those genuine smiles, the uninhibited laughter, the moments of true connection between friends. And yes, there were some slightly risqué shots (it was a vixen-themed party, after all!), but because everyone felt so at ease, even those photos felt empowering and celebratory, not awkward. I made sure to get shots from very low angles to enhance the power of these shots.

The feedback afterwards has been incredible. I've heard (third-hand, of course, which is always a good sign!) that the ladies felt completely comfortable around me, that I was able to "roll with the jokes" and that my presence actually added to the fun. That, to me, is the ultimate compliment. It also helps that one of the girls updated her display picture to one of my shots! It means I succeeded in creating an environment where they could shine and I could capture their authentic selves.

The photos? I'm thrilled with how they turned out. The red light added that perfect touch of drama and moodiness, while the candid shots captured the pure joy and energy of the night.

Becky's hens party was a reminder of why I love photography. It's not just about snapping pictures, it's about connecting with people, capturing genuine emotions and creating lasting memories. And sometimes, it's about bringing a red light to a party and embracing the unexpected!
